Burgundy
Burgundy is a region steeped in wine history, and by far France's most diverse and complex wine region outside of Bordeaux, from Macon in the south all the way up to Chablis in the north.
The variety of soils and growing conditions create a microcosm of different style wines. As a rule of thumb however the reds are made from Pinot Noir and are rich, sumptuous, unbelievably elegant and complex. The whites are normally Chardonnay based and are full of delicate fruit and floral aromas with a buttery palette; this is true until you come to the Chablis region where the soil changes and a more steely and mineral dryness is more evident in this classic Chardonnay.
A great introduction to the better quality Burgandys at a realistic price are "Domaine Rene Monier's", delicate white Burgandy (Chardonnay) or the wonderful red (Pinot Noir).
