Europe
Italy
No longer playing second fiddle to France, Italy is recapturing its ancient history of wine production; the Greeks were cultivating vines in Southern Italy as far back as 1100 BC. Those looking for light easy drinking subtle wines, Italy should be your first stop. The whites and reds are easy to drink and packed full of flavour. Looking for Pinot Grigio? Go straight to the source, nowhere knows this grape as well as the Italians and this shows in Ca'Lunghetta Pinot Grigio, a white wine that will impress with its freshness as it will with its wonderfully style bottle. Like the French, Italians drink some reds lightly chilled in the summer, such as the Tedesschi Vigneto Val Verde Valpolicella, as Italian as Alfa Romeo and just as stunning on a summers evening over looking Lake Garda.
Germany
A very misunderstood country, thanks in part to the 1970’s and the over sweet, under refined ’Hock’ style wine flooding the country. Look beyond your preconceptions and you will discover crisp light dry whites, and deep intense reds like the Schmitt Sohne Dornfelder. Germany also produces incredible dessert wines, made from late harvested grapes to produce a rich, almost nectar like wine with depth and complexity. Treat yourself to a bottle of Hainfelder Eiswein (ice-wine) the perfect end to a dinner party.
Spain
When we think of Spain we think of Rioja or cheap ‘plonk’ we tasted on holiday. A good Rioja can’t be beaten but a bad one will leave you afraid to ever try another. The entire Darien range will re-assure you once again that great wine is still produced. Or move outside the area to Somontano, and try a wonderfully dry crisp Chardonnay from the most revered winery in the area ‘Enate’. Perfect for recapturing those holiday memories.
