California
Today the United States produces wines with immense diversity and ranges that is equal to any of the 'old world' countries. The majority of modern consumers will be than aware of the proliferation of low cost, mass produced wine from California. California is indeed the largest vine growing area in North America, due to the consistent nature of their weather.
However, California is in some ways just as diverse as say Italy in the actual wines produced, from the intense hot dry south to the cooler more Mediterranean style north. It is famous for producing new versions of old classics, such as Chardonnay, Merlot and a plethora of Rosé wines. However, amongst these big brand names, real gems can be found. Why not try the native red grape of the US, Zinfandel, hearty, spicy and full bodied. The best example we have is The Blackstone Wineries 2005 Zinfandel, or a classic Sauvignon Blanc from Parducci, grown in the cooler interior.
Although, California produces 90% of North Americas wine, stunning wines can be found as far east as New York State and as far North as Canada, a truly amazing example is the Pelee Island Pinot Noir Reserve, if the budget stretches, you will never want to drink anything else.
